A railway mishap occurred on Lyttelton wharf to-night, the escape from a more serious disaster being miraculous. As the south express was going on to the Ferry Wharf with passengers for the outgoing Maori something happened at the pointe, and the ladies’ carriage was derailed and overturned.

There were only a few women passengers, and they luckily escaped with a shaking. The ladies’ carriage overturned iwithin about 11 feet of the edge of tflie wharf. Fortunately the train was not travelling very fast, and the capsizing of the carriage was retarded by the couplings holding. Tlie car was really only slowly lowered over on its side..

NOMINATIONS RECEIVED. FOUR CANDIDATES. CHRISTCHURCH, January 10. The following nominations have been received for the Southern Maori seat: — Wereta Tainui Petama, farmer, Tuahiwi. William Daniel Barrett, native agent, Tuahiwi. The nomination of H. Uru, brother of the deceased member will be received to-morrow. This, with the candidature of Te One Matapura Erihana (Ellison), who was already nominated, makes four candidates. COLLISION AT SELWYN.

GOVERNOR .ON THE TRAIN. CHRISTCHRCH. Jan. 10. A motor car ran into the second express from the south at the Selwyn crossing at 7 o’clock to-night resulting in injuries to one of the three occupants, die total destruction of the car, and damage to the Governor-General’s private railway carriage. The occupants of the oar were T. A. Lackner, C. E. Johnston, and Thyne the driver. Lackner received injuries to his back and hip but the others escaped unhurt. The train was promptly pulled up and Dr superintendent of Wellington Hospital, who was a. passenger, attended the injured man. Subsequently he was placed aboard the train and conveyed to Christchurch thence to die hospital. The setting sun was against the motorists, and they did not see the train till they were almost on the crossing. The car was slewed round in the same direction as the train was travelling, but the, bonnet hit a post and the rear of the car was caught by the train and smashed against the fence.

The gas and electrical equipment and the step of the Vice-Regal carriage were torn off, also the woodwork at the rear step of the next coach, containing Lord Jellicoe’s staff.

The Governor walked back to the scene of the accident and made enquiries as to the state of the injured man.
