The Waimate Advertiser. PUBLISHED DAILY. "Multum in Parvo." SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 1921. IRELAND.

The whole Empire is waitng anxiously for the result of the negotiations between the British Government and the leaders of the Irish revolutionary party. The delay is rather trying, but perhaps it is a promising sign, as indicating an earnest and mutual desire to reach an amicable settlement of the age-long controversy. It has been a vast relief to hear little or nothing of murderous outrages and sanguinary reprisals during the last few weeks, and we are sure that it must be the passionate wish of all parties that the truce should develop into a lasting-peace. The Government is apparently prepared to give the revolutionaries every concession short of republican independence; and, this being so, there would seem to be no good reason why Ireland, with full dominion powers, should not consent to remain an integral part of the Empire and enter upon a new era of contented and peaceful prosperity. A refusal to accept the liberal terms of settlement now offend would involve a terrible responsibility, and this remark is applicable to the Ulster Unionist minority as well as to the Sinn Fem minority. Should a peace be indeed secured, the happy consumation will probably be due in large measure to the beneficent influence of King George who is understood to have done his very utmost, within the

constitutional limits of his activity, to further a pacific accommodation of the contending interests
