Unemployment is growing more prevalent in Sydney and other industrial centres, and the trouble is increased by the Federal Government discharging a large number-at Cockatoo Dock, LMigow Small Arms Factory, and other employments, and by tho Governments. of the various States economising through tine public works and other other channels. Similarly, private employers, owing to slackness of business and the constant demands for higher wages with shorter hours, are reducing expenses,* and shortening hands whoroeyer possible. All the States are more or less affected, and unemployed demonstrations are taking place in various cities. Papers teem with appeals to supplement the already generous Government aid for the distressed crowds of workless and allegedly starving women and children /in Sydney. High rents are forcing families in the industrial suburbs yo: paolc like sardines.
