WAIMATE’ s DRAINAGE.

COUNCIL DISCUSSION. A discussion on the general aspects of the drainage completion followed Cr. Evans’ motion that plans should be called for at the Borough Council meeting. “If we are to carry on as soon as th eseptic tank is finished,” remarked the Mayor (Mr F. Nash) ‘“and I think that -is the intention of the Council —we would be able to get on with the work as soon as the loan is carried, if this work is done now. In any ease, it will be necessary to have the levels taken to take a poll.” Mr Evans’s motion that Messrs A. D. Riley and Co. be asked to prepare the specifications was seconded by Cr. Paul. The Mayor remarked that the xpenses would come ouet of the loan; it would not be an additional charge upon the Borough’s finances, “How far back and how wide is the area the scheme will take in?” asked Cr. Nicol.

“We would only take in the Borough,” said the Mayor. “There is a possibility of taking in Exeter St., but it will not be necessary to take tenders for that,, although it should be included in the plan.”

In response to a question by Cr. Nicol, the Mayor said that the position with regard to the Public Hospital would be ascertained when the levels were .taken. It might be necessary to take a special main through ‘Massey Street.

Cr. Evans: “The fact that the Public Hospitsfl and the Government settlement are not connected are points to be made when the Board has the loan under consideration.

Cr. Fulton remarked upon the .necessity of enlarging the main from the reservoir if the drainage scheme were extended.

Cr. Nicol pointed out that the Borough would lose when it had to earry the drain past unoccupied reserves, and urged the necessity of inducements to have them built upon.

The Mayor: “It ray pay us better to electrically pump a street like that, rather than- run a main to it. However, that is a matter for the engineer.

The Foreman of the sewerage disposal works reported to the Council that the floors and sumps of the‘primary beds were complete; also all foundations and one and a half sections of the floor in the secondary beds. The boxing for half the walls and the sumps of the primary beds were erected. The end of that work will be just about complete with the carting of metal for filtering purposes. All the sand was on the site for plastering.
