The condition of MrS George Nicol, who is in hospital with a fractured skull as the result of being knocked down by a cyclist, is still serious.

“The Borough’s ordinary overdraft has been drawn on for £350 for work at the septie tank, awaiting arrival of the £2OOO loan money,” the Mayor (Mr F. Nash) stated last night. “We are not quite on the rocks yet. If this money is a long time coming, we may be ip trouble; but once we get that we can repay the £350, and we will be quite in a sound position. We would have been quite all right but that we>had to keep the work at the septic tank going on. The overdraft is now £1900; the limit is £2500.”

Conditions prevailing with regard to employment were illustrated by the number of applications for cutting a hedge received by the Domains Board last evening. There were 11 tenders for the work ofeutting 50 chains on both sides of the hedge at Knottingly Park, the hedge to be cut at back to the old stumps, and the cuttings thrown over on to the road ready for burning, “to the satisfaction of the Domain Board.” Two tendered at 4/- per chain for the work; one at 4/11; two at 5/-; one at 5/6; three at 6/-; one at 6/6; and one at 7/-. “Some of these men have no idea of what they are taking on,” remarked Mr Evans, after Mr Nash had stated that the Board had once accepted a low tender to have the work thrown up when the tenderer found he could not do it at the price. The tender of F. P. Harris at 4/was finally accepted, Mr Paul remarking that the tenderer would make a good atempt to carry out the work.

Captain McKinney, chief officer of the St. John Ambulance Asociation for Canterbury and Westland, visited Waimate last night. Captain McKinney met the local Brigade and expressed himself as greatly pleased with their efficiency. At a smoko afterwards, at which the Brigade surgeon, Dr. Pitts, was present, the Board’s officers were elected as follows :—Superintendeiit, Mr A. J. Inkster; sergeant, Mr G. Campbell; corporals, messrs W. Hindi, and E. H. Wright; inspector of stores, Mr L. G. Riley. The men’s first aid class meets to-night in the Borough Council Chambers.
