COAL INDUSTRY.

NEW SEAM AT NINE-MILE

DEVELOPMENT URGED

[Per Pi-ess Association—Copyright)

GREYMOUTH, this day

For some time past boring operations have been in progress at Nine Mile. The results so far have exceeded anticipations. The analysis of the coal shows that it is of the very best quality, and superior to that obtained at the Liverpool mine, and as steam coal it should prove equal to the best in New Zealand. The area covered by the new field is very extensive. The outcrop and boring show at least thirteen million tons of coal in sight—sufficient for 20 years. The nine is three miles from Runanga station The country is flat; there are no engineering difficulties in the way of railway construction. The mine will be put in full working order in twelve months. A large meeting was held at Runanga last night. The Mayor presided, and Mr. Holland, M.P., addressed the meeting. A resolution was passed that in view of fact that the Elizabeth mine is practically worked out, and the serious shortage in the Dominion supply and the famine prices, the Government be urged to proceed with the development of the Nine Mile seam. The resolution to be forwarded to the Acting-Premier and the Minister of Mines.
