A valuable and interesting dona, tion to the Auckland Museum ha,s ju,st been made by Mr Louis J. Steele, the well-known artist and connoisseur, the balance of whose, collection of art treasures was sold by auction last week. The donation consists of a, 'number of rare curios, one of the most interesting of which is. an Indian or Afghan sword the handle curiously inlaid with jade. An Indian dagger -with gold inlaid handle of unusual design; and an ivory.handled sword’ with scimitar-shaped blade and brass scabbard ,are also included in the collection. Some finely-carved limespoons and a set of inlaid combs from the Solomon Islands are among the curios, while a carved figure of Buddha, in ivory, is probably one of the rarest articles in the collection Thera are also two quaint little leather hoods used for covering the heads of hawks used in the mediaeval pastime of falconry, these, so far as is known by the Curator, Mr T. F. Cheeseman, being the only articles of the kind in the Dominion’s museums.

In a. letter received recently by Mr E,. H. C. Sanders, of Auckland, from his son ,the late Lieut.-Com--mander W. E, R.N*Ry, V.C„ dated June 8th 1 , 1917 a slight idea, may ho gathered of the strain that luiis to- be undergone by those who- watch the sens in the interests of the Empire;. The letter is as follows: “We have been three weeks and over at sea, waiting and watching]. We never have our clothes off till we return io Base. We never know the pleasures of a sleep-only snatches of it 1 can assure you it is Enough to kill an iron man, let alone a human being. Of course!, 1 feel very highly honored with my position, a,ml have passed ahead of hundreds, just through good lucky I was promoted to lieutenant-commander after only nine months as acting-lieulenanlj, That which put me ahead of all my comrades was the 8.N.H." To this letter is a postscript dated June 12th; “Had another action this morning. Received two slight wounds on arm. No need to stop work. Kia Ora.”

The outbreak was in the kitchen of the. dwelling at the rear of Mr W. Griffiths’s shop, in Queen Street east. Soon hundreds of people were in the street outside the shop, and the Brigade wore promptly at work having easy access to the kitchen per a; large windaw off the right-of-way. The kitchen was badly burnt, but the fire was extinguished before. It spread further .Damage f; am the smoke and water, however, i • evident in the other rooms of the dwelling. .None ot the shop stock wa.s injured, The fire started in a cupboard, and it was the crash of crockery when the shelves' burnt through which alarmed Mrs Griffiths, who was lying down resting. The kitchen range (alongside of which was the cupboard) had'not been (flight (since noon. The building, which is part of a; block owned by Mr John Cameron, wa;s insured in the State office for £3O0 v and the insurance on Mr Griffith s’ stock (and furniture, is £2QO in the North British.
