THE COMMONWEALTH.

LIBERALS AND LABOUR UNITE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. MELBOURNE, Nov. 14. A Federal caucus meeting resulted in a definite split between Mr H ughes and the anti-Conscription party. Eleven Senators and twelve mem hors of the House of Representatives, seeing that the majority wore determined to eject them, left the meeting and assembled in a separate room. Mr Hughes is expected to go ahead after negotiations with the Opposition, of whom, Air AlcDonald, the Speaker, has been elected acting-Leadei'. After the Labour split Air O'Alalley and Air Mahon resigned from the Ministry, and Air Hughes immediately formed a new Cabinet, composed as follows;—■ Mr Hughes, Rrime Alinister and At-torney-General. Air Pearce. Alinister of Defence. " Air Jensen, Navy Alinister. Mr Webster, Postmaster-General. Mr Paynton, Treasurer. Mr Archibald, Minister of Customs. Mr Bumford, Minister for Home Affairs. THE CAUCUS .MEETING. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) When the caucus met a motion declaring the leadership of the party vacant was moved after several members had attempted to heal the 'oreach. Air Hughes stated that as the member.-, were acting under instructions from outside organisations they were impervious to argument. lie expressed regret at severing a lifelong connection with members who were now opposed to him. He vacated the chair, and recuesting his supporters to follow him, left the room and selected a new Cabinet. Mr Hughes tendered his resignation to the Governor-General and received a commission to form a new Government. The new Ministers will be immediately sworn in. Rcfeiring to the cleavage Air Hughes said the position had become quite intolerable. It was incompatible to have as responsible representatives of the Government men who wore no longer free agents, hut merely registered the opinion of outside organisations. It is understood that when the House of Representatives meets the Labour members opposed to Air Hughes will cross over to the Opposition side, and will move a motion of no confidence in the Ministry, ANTI-CONSCRIPTIOXfSTS.
