" " May not such attachment end in those groups being brought within the limits of the New Zealand tariff, thus giving a free entry of goods from Now Zealand, and placing restrictions on goods from Australia ? " " Does he not consider the greatest security for equality of trading conditions is a continuance of direct control of tha islands by the British Government ? " " Will he resist any attempt to divert, except by open competition, the trade which has been developed between the islands and Australia ? " The Herald, commenting on Mr Chamberlain's reply to Mr Seddon's proposal re the islands, says : "Clearly the Commonwealth will be quite a difierent factor to reckon with from a group of separate colonies. New Zealand, as a colony, ia as important as any of them. Under existing circumstances she is quite within her right in making suggestions. We presume Mr Beddon is not desirous of aetting up a counter federation of his own, and no doubt it will only prove a question of time when New Zealand will enter the Commonwealth. But meantime the Commonwealth have I to be reckoned with as a whole in any negotiations affecting British influence in the Pacific This is one of the results of federation foretold, and it will be perceived with pleasure that even the so far unaccomplished consolidation of Australian influence is already beginning to bear fruit."
