MEETING OF RATEPAYERS.

In consequence of the meagre notice given the meeting on Saturday night to discuss the Bill dealing with the Waimate Hospital was poorly attended. The Mayor (Mr R. Nicol) presided. The necessity for so rushing it meeting is hard to find, for the Bill which was introduced in the Upper House had yet to be there discussed before reaching the House of Representatives. Haste was the order of the night, so much so that Major Steward was to be wired the results of the meeting. Mr J. F. Douglas gave a resume of the course of events in connection with the Timaru Board and said that the Bill was the first mention of a necessity to raise £100 by subscriptions. Mr J. Sinclair said thai the clause wai inserted by the chairman of the Timaru Board in collusion with tho Hon. Hall Jones. He felt positive of this, as other members of the Board sinoe the visit to Waimate favoured the local proposals. Mr J. Manchester wanted to be sure of the ground and would like the Bill to be submitted to a solicitor in case of other objectionable clauses not apparent to a layman. After some discussion a resolution strongly protesting against clause 8 and other objectionable clauses was passed to be forwarded to Major Steward, Mr Seddon, and Captain Bussell. It was further decided to engage a canvasser to obtain signatures to a petition to be presented to Parliament. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings.
