At Stockton, California, an armed robber, with a blackened face, held up a river launch containing a pleasure party and robbed them of all their valuables. He compelled the engineer to land all aboard and pursue another launch with the intention of robbing the occupants. The engineer then knocked the robber overboard and beat him to death, using iho oars. His body was recovered.
