Referring to tha Coal Vend he said the Government had full power to prosecute trusts and should not lose a moment obtaining the High Court judgment in such an all-important matter. Touching on strikes, Mr. Deakin said the Government came into power pledged to secure industrial peace which it had done nothing to fulfil. Its efforts instead of allaying it had fomented disputes. The only outlook in place of foment was in the direction of profitsharing and co-operation. Pending their adoption the best thing was a non-political Commission to deal with business questions. Ho severely condemned the Government over the Brisbane strike and he congratulated the Government that its refusal to give the assistance asked by tho Queensland Government had not led to disaster. If those responsible for the rising had been confronted with representatives of Commonwealth they wculd immediately have given way. The- Government’s attitude in rhe matter was a black mark in the Commonwealth’s history.
