AUSTRALIAN TEAM IN ENGLAND

There was bright sunshine, hut the attendance was small, when the match between Surrey and the Australians was resumed. The wicket was still soft. Jennings and Bardsley resumed. Rushby and Smith taking up the bowling. Tne batsmen were careful, and fifty appeared in 65 minutes. Jennings got his leg in front after making 32 in eighty minutes by stylish play. The rest made a poor stand. Without any addition to the score, Bardsley playing forward, was bowled by a break back. He scored nine in threequartcrs of an hour. Six runs later Smith caught Mayne off his own bowling low down, failing in the attempt. Gregory was run out by a smart return by Hobbs’* at silly point. Matthews, without addition to the score, was caught in the slips, four wickets adding only fifteen runs. The remaining three wickets added 28. Smith, in attempting a big drive, was caught at long-on. Emery and Hazlitt saw the century hoisted after 130 minutes’ play. The innings lasted two hours and eighteen minutes. The bowling was good. Bird in Hazlitt’s first over was caught at mid-on behind the bowler. Five for 170. Myers joined Abel and runs camo quickly. Two hundred appeared in 180 minutes. The Australians, requiring 329 to win, opened with Jennings and Mayne. Rushby and Hitch took up the bowling. The latter was sending them in at a tremendous pace. In his second over Jennings was hit by a rising ball and retired with a split finger. Probably ho will bat late in the innings. Mayne, before scoring, gave a chance at the wickets off Rushby. Mayne and Macartney played out time. Gregory, who has been massaged, is better.
