that while cement was being discharged from the steamer Navua, at Queen’s Wharf yesterday afternoon, John Carr, employed as hatchman, was struck by a sling of cement which knocked his head against an iron ladder. He is in the hospital suffering from a fracture of the skull and is in a serious condition.

Good, secretary of the Merchants Association of Now Zealand, writes to the Press Association with respect to tho evidence of Sir. Stormy and cold Heather is probable, with rain generally and snow on the higher levels. The barometer will probably rise fast soon in tho South, but a falling tendency may be expected in the North. Heavy seas are probable on all the western coasts and in Cook and 1-V veaux Straits.”

We regret having to record the death of Mr. John McFadyen, which occurred, after a brief illness, at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. George Heppell ,of Kanieri tramway, at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Tim deceased, who was 11 years of age. v.as a native of Argylshim, Scotland, which place lie loft for Melbourne , landing there in the year IPS!, In 1866 lie came to the West Coast, and in ’6B opened the Kanieri tramway, continuing in that business until 1885, when he disposed of his intoi eats, and foi* tw*enty years undertook contracting, retiring from business some three years ago. The late Mr McFadgeu has throughout his lifetime, been held in the very highest esteem by all who knew', or had dealings, with him. His wife predeceased him some fifteen years ago, and he loaves a family of five sons (John, Edward, Malcolm, William, and Cecil), and six daughters (Mesdames Lamacroft, Ralston, Horton, Heppell, Book, and Dowell), alLof whom are resident among us and to whom the sinccrest sympathy of a host of friends will bo extended in their bereavement.
