Bird won the toss and batted. Hayward and Hobbs opened to the bowling of Hazlitt and Emery, Hayward was in for 55 minutes and was caught at mid-on. Fifty appeared in 65 minutes, and 10 runs later Hobbs in playing forward was smartly stumped by Carkeek.
Hayes and Ducat saw the century up in 115 minutes. At lunch two wickets for 118, Hayes 34. When eight ho was badly missed by Bardsley at point, off Matthews. Ducat was 21, by watchful play and good off driving. The bowling was erratic in length. On resuming. 3000 people wore present. Emery and Hazlitt bowled and in the latter’s second over Ducat’s middle stump was uprooted. He batted 50 minutes.
