Tho Republican fate now rests with a hundred negro delegates, whose sole political privilege is limited to voting at the Chicago Convention. They are delegated traditionally democratic, ami tho Southern States instruct them to vote for Mr. Taft., but Mr. Roosevelt’s manager’s hotel is stated to bo the negro headquarters, and they arc regaling thorn with chicken, drinks and cigars. Mr. Taft’s supporters vie with tho same methods and tho negroes dressed in black coats ,and wearing gorgeous tics and patent leather boots, oscillate between both hotels. The Negroes are, unperturbed at the charges of. bribery and one refused n Taftite bribe of eight hundred dollars. THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES. NEW YORK, Juno 15. The Chicago reports of tho probability of a compromise candidate for the Republican ranks is denied by both sides. Mr. Taft is continuing to gain delegates. There was tremendous enthusiasm on Mr. Roosevelt’s arrival in order to protest at the Committee’s methods, Mr. Taft’s supporters declare that Mr. Roosevelt is making a vast effort to avert defeat. .Air. Taft has now secured 158 delegates and Mr. Roosevelt iiiiu* doloj^atos. Air. Taft is likely to enter tho Convention by a bare majority.
