Mrs Sodden, who left, Wellington on Friday night by the -Maori, reached Gieymouth on Saturday night, and i.s staying with her daughter, Mrs Morice. Mrs Seddon has come to the Coast for the purpose of being present at the complimentary social to bo tendered to her son, Mr T. E. Y. Soddon, M.P., at the .Westland Opctra House, to-morrow evening.

The committee of the Greymouth Boxing Association have practically arranged for a lightweight match between Alf. Sault, of Auckland, and Jack Griffon, of Aritika. The match is to take place early next August. The competitors arc well-known in the boxing world and both have put up some very good performances and thus match should create a great deal of interest.

At the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch on Friday, a young man, named Albert David William Clements (says a press wire) was charged with having assaulted Henry Symonds and having caused him actual bodily harm. Symonda died at the Hospital on Thursday. An inquest into the circumstances of his death was opened and adjourned. The police applied for a remand until next day, and this was granted.

At Timaru on Saturday, says a press message, Detective Fahey, on “Police Gazette ” information arrested a man, who gave his name as George Simonds, on a charge of stealing diamond rings from an Auckland Jeweller, a few weeks ago, by receiving them from a messenger at W. Nathan’s gate, having ordered the rings by ‘phono, as for Mr. W. Nathan. The man made no reply when charged. Prisoner, at the lockup was further charged and admit tel passing two valueless cheques for £8 and £lO respectively on two Timaru publicans on Saturday.

Mrs Williamson, aged seventy-seven, who was severely burned in a (ire in Christchurch on Tuesday night, says a Press wire, died in tho Hospital on Friday. Mrs Williamson, who was very shortsighted, was sitting by tho open fireplace in her bedroom, when, her dross became ignited. With her clothes all ablaze she rushed out to Miss Henry, the other occupant of tho house, who was engaged in tho kitchen. Miss Henry threw a bucket of water over her and pluckily attempted to extinguish tho flames and she was also apparently severely burned. Iho injured ladies were taken to tho hospital. Miss Henry’s injuries were found to be not very serious, but, Mrs Williamson suffered intensely, and never rallied from tho shock. An inquest was held on Friday when a verdict of accidental death from burning was returned.

We regret to have to record the death of Air. J. G. Harris, a wellknown resident of Grey mouth, and a famous athlete. 'The deceased passed away very peacefully on Friday evening at tho Post Office Hotel, Grcymouth, after a comparatively short illness and at the fairly-advanced ago of 67 years. Deceased was a native of Melbourne, a saddler by trade, and arrived on the Coast in 1872, accompanied by Mr. Frank Hewitt, tho champion mile runner of England. Air. Harris was then a very prominent athlete, and showed a remarkable turn of speed on the track, was also endowed with great physical powers of endurance and was successful in holding the ten mile pedestrian championship of Australasia. He had all the true instincts of good sport and his judgment of competitors was always a reliable guide and as unerring as it was keen and sure. Deceased was a very active member of the Athletic Club and for years hold the position of starter. He also look a deal of interest in and was an active mom her of the local Rosing Association, and the world of sport has lost in “Jack” Harris, an exemplary character, a man whoso word or judgment was never questioned, and his removal from our midst will ho sincerely mourned by a very largo circle of friends. The deceased loaves a married daughter in England. During bis illness everything possible was done by Air. and Airs Gicseking, with whom ho stayed.
