HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho ordinary meeting of the Council was hold last evening at 7.30 o'clock. Present—Mr G. Perry (Mayor), Crs Cculson, J, McGregor, J. Jones, J. Poftke, A. D. Crawford and T. Robinson. The absenso of Cr Blank was apologised for. Inward Correspondence: From G. F. Wilmot, stating that he was willing to pay £lO towards road repairs rendered necessary by hij firm’s traction engine, providing that the Council would deposit gravel near tho loading skids close to the wharf. —Received and resolved that the matter he held over. From Westland Railway League, forwarding resolutions carried at a public meeting held at Tvutnara, and asking co-operation of Council.—Received, and resolved to request the Prime Minister to favourably consider tho matter. From A. Cedorman, asking permission to fence in portion of Jollic street ami offering to keep tho same dear of got se.—Received. It was resolved to offer no objection. From J. Maunder, resigning his position as poundkeeper.—Received and resolved to transfer the duties to the o\ ersoer. hrom D. O’Sullivan, requesting to have tho gorso in front of his section in Fitzherbcrt street removed.—Received and resolved on tho motion of Cr Coulson to grant the request. From 18. Stickles, complaining of being sued for rates without notification.—Received. Tho Town Clerk explained that notice had boon sent out in the ordinary way. Tho cx-rato collector (Mr. Maunder), who was also present, stated that ho had delivered the said notice H was resolved to take no action, Cr Crawford hero stated that an old resident and a member of a local body had also been summonsed for rates. Ihe Clerk explained that tho amount was much overdub and in such matters there were no distinctions made. Cr Coulson commended the Clerk for his action in regard to tho collection of rates generally, and tho strict impartiality shown. - The remarks wore endorsed by the Mayor.

The report of tho CJiaritable Aid Sub-Committee in regard to the invest fixation of the Board’s books and vouchers was hero road. On tho motion of Cr Crawford, seconded by Cr Robinson, the Borough Cuneil’i) sub-coinmitteo’s report was unanimously adopted. Cr Coulson moved “ That tho Au-ditor-General bo requested to cause a refund of all monies illegally drawn by the secretary and members of tho Board.” This was seconded by Or Jonw. Cr Robinson suggested that the matter should bo dealt with by a full meeting of the Council, In any ease he said Cr Coulson should have spoken and moved his resolution before tho report was adopted. Cr Crawford said he was not opposed to the resolution, but thought it would be wise in view of tho conference which was being held, to defer taking any drastic steps. After further liscussion tho Mayor ruled Cr Coulson’s motion out of order, Cr Coulson then gave notice to move in the direction indicated. Tho treasurer reported the position as follows: —Receipts £152 10s Vd, payments, £162 9s 6d; District fund account Cr. £590 4s 2d.—Received. Accounts amounting to £270 were piesented by Cr Coulson (chairman of tho Finance Committee), and passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
