HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting, of the Hokitika Borough Council last evening at 7,20 o’clock. Present: Mr. G, A. Perry (Mayor), Crs Coulson, J. McGregor, J Jones, J, Peake, A. D .D. Crawford, T. Robinson, and H. Blank. The Mayor explained that the object of the meeting was to deal with a letter from the Charitable Aid Board asking the Council to appoint throe delegates to attend a Conference of representatives of Contributing Bodies to discuss the question of the erst of the Charitable Aid Administration in Westland.-

A letter to this effect was read (,y the Town Clerk.,

The Mayor moved that Cw. Coulsrn, Crawford and the mover ho rppcirted delegates.

This was seconded by Cr. Robinson,

Cr. Coulson moved an amendment, that no delegates bo appointed, cr.d the Minister of Hospitals be requested to hold an inquiry in respect to charitable aid administration in the Wc-tland district, and, if possible, advenee recommendations' by which Iho present largo expenditure may bo substantially reduced.”

In speaking to the amendment, the mover expressed the opinion that asm© members of the Board were not sine-' -e in suggesting that a conference shoull be held, and he was opposed to it for the reason that in his opinion it i.ovld servo no useful purpose. Cr Blank seconded the amendment, an in doing .so remarked tlhat the sooner the Government got control of the Board’s affairs the better it would be for tho ratepayers. Cr Hannam here took his seat.

Cr's Crawford and Robinson spoko in support of the motion whicli was eventually agreed to. Crs McGregor, Coulson and Blank dissenting. Cr Coulson moved that the interim levy of £7O per month, as suggested by the Board, be paid ; seconded by Cr Crawford and carried. The meeting then terminated.
