HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Council was hold last evening at 7.30 o’clock. Present: Mr. G, Perry (Mayor), Crs. Coulson, J. McGregor, C. Hannam, J. Peake and 11. Blank. After tho confirmation of the previous minutes the outward correspondence was approved. Inward Correspondence. From Reefton Chamber of Commerce, relative to the freight on coal, and stating that if the freights were reduced the llceftou product would ho i ptocurablc in Hokitika at a lower price than what inferior fuel was being sold at; stating that a request had heen made to the Hon. A. 11. Guinness j i i the direction indicated.—Received. I Ci. Coulson moved that representation ! he made to bring about tho desired reduction.—Seconded by Cr, Blank, and carried. From R-. Wells, offering to lease reserve 370, Jolly Street.—Received. On the motion of Cr. Coulson, seconded by the Mayor, it was resolved to refer the matter to the Reserves Com- . mittee, far re]Kirt to next meeting. . From Westland Hospitals and Charitable, Aid Board, granting Council’s request as to the examination of the Board’s books and vouchers; advising that Mr. 11. B. Bock had resigned his . seat on the Board and asking the Council to fill the vacancy.—Received. ( Tim Mayor moved that Cr. Coulson be apjxmited to the vacancy caused by tho resignation of 31 r. Bock. Seconded ’ by Mr. H. Blank. Cr. McGregor moved that Cr. Hannam he appointed. Seconded by Cr. [ Pcako.

Tho amendment was then put and lost, C'rs. McGregor, Uamiani, and Peake supporting and the Mayor, CTs. Blank and Conlson voting against. The motion was then put and carried on tho casting vote of the Mayor. From C. and M l . Aitken drawing attention to the dangerous condition of tho drain in Hampden Street and asking that a lamp he erected at the corner of Livingstone and Hampden Streets. —Received. After some discussion it m resolved to erect a lamp at Kearn’s corner.

Hannam remarked that a number of lamps had been promised far various parts but he noticed that nothing was being done in that connection, He mentioned that lamps had been placed close to oxCouncillor Gooch’s and the town clerk’s residences, but some people could not get what they wanted. Mr. Maunder stated that it would cost £25 to place a lamp at Livingsteno Street corner. It was ultimately resolved that a lamp be erected at Ream's corner as previously decided upon. The treasurer reported the position as follows; Receipts, £165 Ila lOd; Payments, £268 8s; District Fund Credit, £445 8s 6d.—Received. Accounts amounting to £l9O 13s 3d were passed for payment. Cr. Coulson (chairman of tho Reserves Committee) reported that in connection with Mr. Halliday’s offer of £4O for Section 1278, Haast StrortA, the owner of the adjoining section had offered £45. His committee recommended that the section be offered for competition, tho upset price to bo £4o. Received and adopted. The overseer rejxtrled on improvements which were being effected to the various streets within the Borough.— Received. Cr. Blank (chairman of tho Public Works Committee) referred to tho necessity of cutting gorse in Weld and Sale Streets and several other necessary works which wore referred to the Committee for attention. Tho meeting then terminated.
