[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYEIGB?,.] ALLEGED FRAUD. BLENHHEIM, April 12.—Edmund John Walsh (grocer), and John Vernon | Binley (telegraphist) appeared at the j Magistrate’s Court to-day charged with conspiring by deceit to defraud Ross and Bradshaw and Scott and Ma.rtiudale, Wellington, of the sums of £34 and £SO 10s on certain betting transactions. It is alleged that Binley arranged that Walsh go to the Wanganui races leaving signed telegrams to the firm’s mentioned containing names of the horses likely to win at Wanganui, the telegrams to be handed in prior to the time of the race. Walsh telegraphed tho winners to an address in Blenheim. Binley watched the Wanganui wires and held back telegrams to the firms. Ho erased the horses names and substituted the winning horses. The firms became suspicious and made inquiries and a prosecution resulted. Inspector Ellison appeared for the police alter hearing the evidence the case was adjourned. LABOR DEMANDS. WELLINGTON, April 12.—Tho Trades and Councils Conference resolved to urge the Government to have all school books printed by tho State and issued free of charge; that the Government be urged to erect more houses in eacli centre with a view to bringing down extortionate rents; also to immediately establish competitive State services and factories with a view to reducing the cost of living.
