QUESTION OF AMALGAMATION

NEGOTIATIONS WITH MINERS’ FEDERATION. 1 l-ai>. PIIKSS ASSOCIATION.— COPY HlO HI CHRISTCHURCH, April, 20. The Trades Conference this morning received a telegram from the" Miners Federation stating that it was impossible to hold a conference at present to discuss the question, of amalgamation. General, regret was expressed by the delegates at the failure in the attempt, to unite the two sections of labour and many speakers urged that further efforts be made.

The Conference discussed'.at length the proposal that a plebiscite of members of two divisions be taken on the question of amalgamation.

CHRISTCHURCH, April 20. i At the Trades and Labour Conference to-day the following telegram was received from Mr Glover, secretary of the Miners’ Federation of ’ Labour;— “ Useless having conference at present, our representatives not having power to act. Would suggest you appoint representatives to meet our conference when in session. (Signed) .Glover.” Tile following resolutions here arrived at:—“ That a delegation he appointed to wait upon the Miners’ Federation, the delegation to be instructed to urge that the basis of amalgamation be the decision of the Trades and Labour Conferences and the constitution of this Federation.”

“That in the event of amalgamation not being agreed to in the terms of the resolution passed, the delegation confer further with the Miners’ Federation for the purpose of drawing up a provisional constitution for an Amalgamated Federation, and that such constitution be submitted to a plebiscite vote of the affiliated unions, and on a majority declaring for the same, such constitution shall be adopted and a complete amalgamation be effected.” The following were appointed the delegation to wait on the Miners Federation in July: Messrs- Reardon,- Farrant, Paul, Young, Reader, Horning, anc Jackson.
