MAN BRAVELY AVERTS A COLLISION.

EVIDENTLY A COLLISION. AUCKLAND, April I?.—A man named Claude caught sight of a runaway train when it was a hundred yards away and the express one and a-ha.l£, miles distant. Both were- travelling down a decline, the express twenty miles ah hour ,and the runaway eight miles anhour. Claude jumped on the runaway and applied the Westinghouse brakes, waved a red light to the express,' and informed two passengers of their danger. The express pulled within two yards of the runaway. Even if the driver of the express had seen the danger earlier he could not have averted a collision. The Hons. Carroll and ThorneGeorge, M.L.C., headed a subscription to a fund to recognise Claude’s service. It is intended to recommend the Government to do something substantial in that direction. [The first portion of the message is evidently astray.]
