SYDNEY, March 21.-—The preliminary rcp'prts of the vital statistics of New South Wales for 1909 state the population at the end of last year was 1,645,444, an increase of 40,435. The marriages numbered 13,048 or 8.3 per thousand, the highest record for 22 years. The births wore 43,769 or 26.94 per 100, tiic lowest rate on record, and 9 per cent below the mean record of past years. PECULIAR MANSLAUGHTER CASE

SYDNEY, March 22.—The trial of Dr Carlo Fiaschi and Nurse Young on a charge of manslaughter of a girl named Nightingale at Litligow on January 10th last, opened yesterday. A doctor who had previously stated that there was no indication of an operation for hemorrhoids, .and that an important organ was missing, gave evidence to the effect that the supposed missing organ was to-day found in the presence of a number of medical experts, attached to another organ, and that the body bore indications of an operation for hemorrhoids. Under the cimimsftauces, ho therefore reversed his previous evidence, which arose through the abnormal conditions of the organs.

Hughes attempted to capture the intruder, who drew a knife and inflicted a slight wound on Mr Hughes. The Chinaman escaped from the room and in getting out was observed by a constable, who fired three shots at him. The dead body of the Chinaman was found at daylight in the bush, two shots having taken effect.
