THE EDUCATION GRANT.

A FAIR HELD TO RAISE FUNDS

CHRISTCHURCH, March 17

The withdrawal of the extra capitation grant of 9d by the Education Department was referred to this afternoon at the opening of a fair organised by the East Christchurch School Committee with a view to making up the deficeiency in its income. Mr T. H. Davey, M.P., in opening the fair, said it would not be expedient for him to enter into a disquisition on political matters that could best wait till he reached Wellington, where with the help of fellow members he would do all he could to get the grant restored. He read a telegram he had sent to he Minister of Education suggesting that as the Government frequently subsidised public money raised for laudable objects a subsidy should be given on the amount raised by the fair. Mr Fowk]s had replied, however, stating that it impossible to comply with the request as there was no vote from which a subsidy could be paid.
