AUSTRALIA'S NEED FOR IMMIGRATION

Deakm, at an Exhibition luncheon, epoke of the necessity for increased immigration to develop the country. He said the Commonwealth and States must consider this matter closely, with which their advancement is intimately associated. If tbe States would make land easily available to satisfy the inflow of immigrants and come to an agreement with regard to the manner in which they would compete with immigrant?, tbe Federal Government was prepared to submit a Bill next cession and to ask Parlia. raeut to vote liberal subsidies to advertise Australia in England and bring out suitable immigrants at cheap fares, thus competing with Canada. The Government were also preparing a ecbeme of bounties to encourage new products. The States should thus be inspired to advance te the conquest of tbe great interior, which was at present practically unoccupied. It was was a great national question. The Government made the States a practical offer, hoping to lead t* practical business.
