RACING

WESTLAND RACING CLUB.

MIDSUMMER MEETING

FIRST DAY.

•Although the lset of Hie many fixtures that have taken place during tbo holidays the annual reunion of our local Racing Club was a Rigautic success from every point of view. First of all the weather was simply perfect, the attendance was almost a record one ; the management was above all reproach ; and, lastly, the Sport waa as good aa could be wished the most fastidious.

Amongst the visitors was the Ri<jLt Hon the Premier, Mrs Seddoo, and party, and they heartily joined in to make the present meeting an unqualified success. The stewards entertained the Premier's part} during the afternoon and the right hon gentleman made a short but felicitous speech. Contrary to expectations expressed in many quarters the racing was really excellent. Certainly the fields were not very large, but, nevertheless, were well contested, and speculation in consequence was very brisk. Mr Lynch and staff handled the sum of £2,989 in good style. The Kumara Catholic Band, under Bandmaster Bremmond, was present and discoursed excellent music during the afternoon. The booths — publicans' and luncheon — did a roaring trade, and should be well satisfied.
