Mr W BJHowell was again re elected cbairmau of the Education Board. .
On resuming ibo cbair.. ht> refuted inter alia to the shortage of teachers of hts and suggested tbac some had moved to the North Island where the population was increasing. Others had -gone intq business in places of men gone to South Africa.
Several matters to be brought before the Conference of Board Representatives at Wellington were discussed and the Rev G Barclay, the Board's delegate, was informed of the Board's views on each item. Increased grants for administra* tion weie approved and Mr Barclay suggested that the transfer of 2s 6d from scale 2 to boards, and increase of ineiden* tals by one would meet the requirenenc <if this Board. Regarding secondary education the offer of tho Timaru High School Board was endorsed with some dissent
The wish of the Department was to give high schools tbe same subsidy as district high schools and the Board will make all seats free* and allow them to retain endowments to those passing standard test as in district high schools.
The Board objects to the anpmoly that while the children in _ the ainialier towns of Waimate, Temuki and Geraldine get secondary education free those in Timaru rannot except through soholarships. The proposal to place inspectors under a central department was objected to bat it suggested they might eximirie a few ichool in other districts to test whether the results were uniform.
