STAFFORD NOTES.

The loci coronation celebration yesterday were very successful in spite of the threatening aspect of the weather, at times during the afternoon and even'ng. During the afternoon the children were enterta ; ned at the School grounds with sports, games, etc. A number of young ladie3 fiom Hokitik* rode gaily decorated bicycles on to the school grounds during the af nernoon ana added attractiveness to the scene. A number of school girh under the able direction of Mrs Rjde gracefully danced the maypole dance. A considerable number of adults weie present. Afternuon tea and refreshments consisting of sandwiches, cake, lollies, etc were served between 3 and 4 pm. At night between 6 and 7 p.m the premises of the leading citizens of Stafford, notibly those of Messrs B Lyons and F. Henne were I brilliantly illuminated, Mr T Low senior | fired a royal salute of 21 guns from his I anvil. A large bonfire was lit on top of Ballarat Hill, and a number of rockets, more conspicuous for their bid quality than for the effectiveness of their display were discharged. Between 7 and 8 p.m ( the Groldsbnrough Brass Band who kindly gave their services for the occaBion under the able direction of Mr F. Martini played a number of excellent selections in the town and also in front o£ the Oddfellows Hall before the tntertaininent. The entertainment wh'.ch consisted of a concert and ball was a preafc .success, the ball being crowded to t"i« door and waa tastefully decorated for the occasion with flag 3 snd evergreen? by the ladies. The various concert, items were ably rendered by the per' formers, and were duly appreciited by the large audience. Mr B. Bremond delighted the audience with his rendering on the violin of "- Scotch Airs " and also o£ " imitations. ' Mrs Dew deseives great credit for the close personal attention and careful musical training given to her pupils as sbown in the two excellent items given by them. The accompanists were Mr B. Bremond, Meadames, Dew Rickards Ryde, Mrses Murphy, Heron, Havill and M. Coyle. The singing of the National Anthem brought the concert to a close after which refreshments, tea and coffee were handed round. The hall was then cleared for dancing, which commenced shortly after 11 p.m. to tlis delightful music supplied by Mr B Bremond (violin) and Miss Galbraith piano, and was kept up until about 2am when ref rehhments were again served; Dancing was then resumed and kept up with spirit until 4 a.m. The floor was in capital, order, and was in charge of Mr J Krawkowski, who very efficiently carried- out the duties of M.C assisted by Mr J Masci*. oriniof Groldsborough. It is my pleasant duty to congratulate my esteemed fellow townsman, Mr T W Duff on his election aa a member of the Education Board, and I feel sure that he will worthily "and "ably "represent this district in that captcity.
