Shortly after midnight a fire broke out in the front portion of David Hollam's store, Hunterville. It quickly spread to the adjoining premises.

Fifteen shops and the Argyle Hotel were destroyed.

Hancock, saddler ; Bray, hairdresser ; M-Eldowuey, draper ; Argyle Hotel ; Ryan, tailor; Argyle stable?; Remington, chemist; Sherman, new premises; Mrs Currie, fruiterer; Morris, grocer; Teraperence Hall; Library; Quen Lee, fiuiterer; Batt, dentist, and a portion of Harper's stables and a China nan's cabinet making shop were also destroyed .

Only three shops at the extreme end of Brace Street are standing.

The fire would have extended further only the brigade pulled down a portion of Harper'H stables. In the other street the fire was stopped by placing sheets of iron un the Argyie stables. Wellington, Jan 21.

The damage by the Hunterville fire is estimated at £20,000. The companies are interested in amounts varying from £800 to £1500 .-—United, Imperial, Alliance, Australian Alliance, Commercial Union, Royal, New Zealand, Standard, London and Liverpool.

Nearly all the Fire Insurance offices hold risks on the p-cperty destroyed in the fire at Hunterville this morning. The following are' stated to be amounts:— United, £600 (J. M'Eldowney, £400, G. W.D. Mcrris, £75, Temperance hotel and contents .£125) ; Standard, £380 : Alliance, £450 ; Imperial, £900 • Australiau Alliance, £450 ; Liverpool, London and Globe, £800 ; National, £350 ; North Queensland, £150. The New Zealand Company is understood to be interested to the extent of £2750, part of which, however, is reinsured. The losses of the South British and Phoenix offices are not yet known.

The Argyle Hotel, a lar^a building of 50 rooms, was owned by 0. and W. Young, aud D wan Bros, of Wellington. Mkliioukne, Jan 21 A block o£ business places were burned at Geelong. The damage is £16,000.
