The first day of the Taranaki J.C. Summer meeting was held to-day in fine weather. The attendance was large and the racing good. The following are the results I— Maiden Plate, 30 soys — Papakura, 1 ; Brigette, 2 ; Kaimate, 3. Won fairly comfortably. Time 2min 20 2-sth sees. Div £3 ss. Time, lmin 15sec9. Summer Cup— Tornado, 1 ; Old CIo, 2 ; Insulator. 3. Twenty started. Betting— 6 to 1 against Tornado ; 7 to 1, Agate ; Bto 1, Old Clo ; 10 to 1, Positano. A close finish between the placed hoises Won by a head. Time, 3min 4£secs. MELBOURNE RACES. Melbourne, Dec. 27. The weather was very calm for the races. Hopetoun Cvp — Chitchat, 1 ; Moonlyong, 2 ; Sortie, 3. Fifteen started. Betting — 7 to 2 against Chitchat ; sto 1, against Moonlyong. The favorite took charge at the entrance to the straight and won by a length and a quarter. Time, lmin 45secs.
