The first day of the Taranaki J.C. Summer meeting was held to-day in fine weather. The attendance was large and the racing good. " Ha«k Derby, of 150 soys — Okoari, 1 ; Bowsprit, 2 ; Pohutukawa, 3. An exciting finish. Won by half a neck in 2min 48 4-sth sees. Div £2. Scurry Stake* — Disraeli, I ; Smgleshot, 2 : Kimua, 3. Haudicap Hurdles, 50 soys— Adam, 1 ; Clayton, 2 ; King of the Downs, 3. Won hy a short neck in 2min 57 2-sth sec 9. Div £8 18s. Xmas Handicap, of 70 soys — Crusoe, 1 ; Okoari, 2 ; The Major, 3. Won by a length in lrain 47 3- sth sees Div £12 18s. Ladies Purse — Papakura, 1 ; Adam, 2 ; Zephyr, 3. Time lmin 50 2-sth sees. Div £2 Is. Pony Handicap — Fairy, 1 ; Trooper, 2; Clayton, 3. (Received Dec 27, at 8.20 p.m.) SYDNEY RACES. [ Sydney, Dec 27. There was a good attendance at Ratidwick races to-day. Villiers Stakes— Loch Maire, 1 ; Mecca, 2 ; Skylark, 3. Won easily. Time, lmin 15sec9. Summer Cup— Tornado, 1 ; Old CIo, 2 ; Insulator. 3. Twenty started. Betting— 6 to 1 against Tornado ; 7 to 1, Agate ; Bto 1, Old Clo ; 10 to 1, Positano. A close finish between the placed hoises Won by a head. Time, 3min 4£secs. MELBOURNE RACES. Melbourne, Dec. 27. The weather was very calm for the races. Hopetoun Cvp — Chitchat, 1 ; Moonlyong, 2 ; Sortie, 3. Fifteen started. Betting — 7 to 2 against Chitchat ; sto 1, against Moonlyong. The favorite took charge at the entrance to the straight and won by a length and a quarter. Time, lmin 45secs.
