Attention ia directed to Messrs Pollock & Beyan's sale of valuable- freehold property, household furniture, etc., which takes place on the premises, Hampden street,. this afternoon at 2.30. Mr C. J. E. Linnemann announces a great salvage sale of drapery, etc , which will be continued during the Christmas holidays in those premises known as Moss Levy's. Unprecedented bargains will be obtainable as Mr Linnemann has definitely decided to clear every line.

The special general meeting of the Hokitika Fire Brigade will be held at 7.30 this evening instead of 8 o'clock as previously announced.

Attention is called to the fact that the coach for Christchurch will leave Jackson on Thursday this week instead of Friday as usual, and the train service has been altered accordingly. Passengers wishing to journey to Christchurch will require to leave Hokitika on Thursday morning by the early train and will travel to Jackson by a special train which will leave Greymouth at 9.45 a.m. This service will substitute the usual Friday's service, and will enable passengers to reach their respective destinations on Friday, Christmas Eve.

An old friend was in town last evening in the person of Mr G. . W. Moss, who is down from Auckland to spend the holidays with his friends in Greymouth, Mr Moss is looking remarkably well and was cordially welcomed by his many friends at the Arahura yards and in town.

West Australia so far as mining is concerned (says an English paper) is now said to be looking up, but there are difficulties there of which tho City takes no notice. An indignant lady writes complaining of being not only without a servant, but dreadfully bothered for want of a washing woman. She made abargain with one for 6s a day and railway fare, bat whether the washer person made a rise on Change in the meantime, or married a millionaire when the day to begin work came, she scornfully declined the job. The butcher on being appealed to knew of two but did not like to recommend either. Then the lady seems to have turned to the baker, but he could not render much more help than the butcher. Finally a young girl condescended to come for one day, jbut the writer asks society to try and imagine her feelings, when this person appeared before her in a fashionable black crepon dress, a si ver bangle ou her wrist, aud her hair done up in curling pins. She certainly must have presented a pretty gorgeous vision jat the wash-tub, but is that a matter to go into the lamentations over ?

The Premier, in reply to Mr Flatman said the House bad already decided to give the united Fire Brigades £250 a year, and no more, and he did not propose to alter that. The Brigades would get £250 this year and £250 next, when only a conference would be held, and that was sufficient for them.

Whilst the Very Rev. Father Devoy was in Sydney (says the New Zealand Times) he saw a gold watch made in 1632 and owned at one time by Dr. Oliver Plunket, the Bishop of Armagh, who was beheaded on Tyburn Hill in the 17th century. He also saw a breviary which hud been owned by Mary Queen' of Scots. These relics are in possession of Cardinal Aloran.
