[Per United Press Association] < Melbourne, July 15. • The barque Ben Nevis, bound from Glasgow to Dnnedin, put in fer repairs. On toe 3rd, she experienced a terrible hurricane. The poop' deck and hatches, bulwarks aud boats were smashed, and the decks completely cleared. The cabins were flooded. A seaman named Johanson was washed overboard and drowned. The steering gear was damaged, and the vessel being unmanageable broached to, and narrowly escaped foundering. The storm however, abated, the steering gear was righted and the vessel arrived in a battered condition. Sydney, July 15. Nothing has yet been heard of the Aoiangi. The French steamer Tanais is also overdue from Noumea. In both cases it is supposed accidents have happened to the machinery. Wellington, July 15. The steamers Taupo and Daco which went to the assistance of the Wainui, have been signalled. When the Taupo left, the Wainui was up on the hard with her bow exposed at low water. The Taupo has all but about 80 tons of the Wainui's coal cargo, and the Ducojhas general cargo. It is expected temporary repairs will be completed in the course of a day or two, and the steamer come on to Wellington. The Taupo and Duco have returned from the Wainui. It appeared a fire broke out amongst the cargo of the Wainui owjng to water getting at some sacks of lime 'stowed on the top of the coal under t,he general cargo. The latter was removed and the lime hoisted overboard. Very lityle damage was, Jiowever, done. The Wainui is afloat aft but her bow is fully ten feet up on the dry beach at Iqw water and there will be little or no difficulty in effecting temporary repairs. Nelson, July 15.
