THE ELECTIONS.

Yesterdays- .-election, was one of the ] < most memorable experienced here for / many years. Owing to the lateness,, of Mr nominjajibnvths. snpporters of Mr Seddon had very little time to organise and get. into -'working order. But as soon as the tocsin was sound© 1 they went to work with alwill. Telegrams were despatched in all directions, buggies and other vehicles brought into requisition, and prominent supporters made hurried visits to all the outlying places looking up. the faithful of the clan and arraag- . ing for the formation of committees. Within a couple of days qommitoees had heen formed, the voters divided into districts, and an actife canvass prosecuted. On Mr Grimmond's side there was no organisation whatever. . -The agencies we have already referred to prevented, the formation of committees and all, that could be done was to, address the electors and rely on the • silent support of the peopla, added' to the assistance rendered by a few friends who were undeterred .by the influences we h,ave mentioned. The ejection was memorable so far as the district is con^ from the fact that it was the first occasion on which the women's vote was made operative. , When woman's, suffrage was before Parliament the impression seemed to be that.it would either degrade women or elevate the tone of political contests. Yesterday's experience, so far as this place is concerned, tends to support the first contention. A special .feature was made of the women's committee and the spectacle., presented in Swell street and in the court yard of the Government buildings yesterday was not of a nature that would make us proud of the weaker sex or increase the innate reverence which men should feel for women. Possibly, when the first flush of the novelty wears off, they may take a more refined and difni6ed.position, jbut at present they lose terribly. The polling . at the principal booths proceeded steadily throughout the day whilst vehicles of various descriptions were employed conveying supporters of the candidates to the poll. Mrs Seddon, with Miss L. Seddon, was about Mr Secidon's committee rooms during the, day and Mr Grimmond apiyect f roni , Kumara a$ 5 o'clock in the afternoon. Owing to the
