The apology tendered by Truth for reflections on Government officers has been accepted, Truth paying costs and publishing apology as an advertisement in the principal towns. An old pensioner of the 9th Regiment named Jas. Begg, aged 75, committed suicide at Hutt by hanging himself. He has been drinking and was brooding over loss of his last pension. The relief works committee met to-day, when it was resolved that the scale for pay for men employed on work be 3s, 4s, and 5s per day ; that married men shouli. - in every case have the preference of em ployment. Planeke, for breaking into the Greytown North railway station, will betaken to-morrow and after that Jewett and Kennedy will be charged with the murder of Louie Smith. The Public Works committee of the City Council decided to bring forward a motion that inquiries be made as to whether the corporation has power to establish a Chinese quarter and if not that steps be taken to obtain that power and compel the Chinese to occupy such a quarter as in Melbourne and other large cities. Rumor is current that Sir Patrick Buckley succeeds to the vacant judgeship. Dunedin, Aug. 10. A child, slightly over two years old, son of a miner at Green Island named M'Lachlan, was drowned in a well close to the house. The hills around the city had a fresh coating of snow this morning and rain and hail fell during the day. Auckland, Aug. 12. The change of personation was withdrawn. It is conemplated to form a Chamber of Mines. The Wanganui football team left by the Takapuna for New Plymouth, where they play on Wednesday.
