The sitting member was re-elected for Starborough. The Tories gain Outby, where Wyvil was elected. Returns up to date are—Tories, 385.; Liberals, 148 ; Parnellites, 10 ; Anti-Parnellites, 50.
Scott, Liberal, has been elected for Leigh. Sitting members are returned for Norwich, Chesterfield, Totnes, and South Tyrone. The Tories gain Dumbarton. (Wol:e) and Radnorshire, (Milbank.) The Liberals gain Mid-Norfolk, (Wilson.)
The Times i egrets that Reid's majority in the NeAv South Wales elections is not sufficient to dispense with the Labor party. It says the attack on the propertied classes and the Legislative Council will raise grave constitutionalquestions there. It is fortunate that Lord Hampden is an able man, and also practically acquainted with ih9 working of parliamentary institutions. Moreover, Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies, is not likely to be driven on a wrong course by popular clamour.

Messrs Laycock, Goodfellow and Bell have taken over the London and Continental Bank and exchange, also the Paris branch.
J lpan has requested China tq pay the war indemnity in London. This is regarded as an indication that Japan proposes to give large orders for war material in England.
Sitting members were returned for Mid-Durham, North Mayo, Ossory, St Auatell, Hyde, Newbury, Govan, and Partick Division of Lanark. Hodge, Tory, was elected for Henley. The Liberals gain N.W. Lanark, where Olburn was elected.

Returns to date are :— Tories and Unionists, 394; Liberals, 158 ; Parnellites and Anti-Parnellites, 62.

Rio Janiero, July 25. Great excitement was caused in Brazil by the annexation of the kland iof Trinidad, in the South Atlantic, by England. The Brazilian Government has made a warm protest, declaring the island in a part of tho Republic's territory.
