West Coast Times. TUESDAY, NOV 29, 1892.

We record with regret the death of Mr A. E. Tennant which took place at the Westland Hospital yesterday morning of B rights disease of the kidneys although he was guttering from several additional ailments. Mr Tetmant was an old resident of Hokitika and in his time has seen many vicißsitudes i He arrived in Canterbury early in the Bixtieß, a young man, well connected at Home and with every prospect of a brilliant career. Entering the service of the Canterbury Government, he was transferred to Hokitika shortly after the gold rush, as clerk to Mr Commissioner Sale. On the formation of tho firßt County of Westland he held a position in the County Treasury, and on the County becoming a Province ho held a position in tho Superintendents Office- When tho provinces were abolished he obtained an appointment under the General Government iv the stamp office. Sad times then swept over him, and ho commenced to drift. The fast life led by so many in tho3o oarly days had set its seal upon him and his career was ended. Above all things Mr Tennant was known as an enthusiastic cricketer. When in Canterbury, before coming to the Coast, he was one of the team selected to play the English cricketers, and since his arrival here no team was considered properly selected that did not include him. This applied as muoh to the time when Hokitika boasted one of the best cricket teamß in New Zealand as to its somewhat degenerate later days. He was always considered a good safe bat, whilst ; his wicket keeping was for years beyond reproach. None who have played cricket with him but will regret the loss of the staunch player, always courteous and gentle* manly and hopeful when things looked their worst. Young players, too, will have cause to remember the many (practical lessons, the useful hints he has given them. "Old Tennant," as it had become the custom to call him on the cricket field, will be remembered with lingering regret by numbers who will recall to mind the merry coach journeys, the eager anticipations, the delight of the match, and finally the triumphant or jolly, but never sorrowful, return home,
