LEASE OF MILLER'S FARM ARAHURA.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, — I observed by tho report of tho proceedings at the last meeting of the Westland County Council, that the offer of Mr Quinn to lease the above farm at a rontul of £8 per annum was accepted. In my opinion, it is a very unusual and inadvisable course to let or lease lands the property of the public, or lands purchased out of the County revenue, without tenders for the leasing of the same having previously having been called for through the local press. In fact, there appears to me, as i£ there were something one-sided in reference to this transaction, as in place of obtaining a rental of £8 per annum, it is not only possible but expressly probable, that, had tenders been invited, a rental of double that amount might have been obtained and in addition to that advantage tho public interest would have been better served, had the Council reserved a public thoroughfare through the said land. You would greatly oblige myself and others, who are interested in tho matter by favouring us with your opinion on the subject. I am &c. " Settler " Arahura 20th January 1886.
In Alsace-Lorraine the sale of the Petit Journal of Paris has been forbidden.
