THE LATE BUSH FIRES.
New Plymouth, January 19.
At. a meeting of the Relief Committee to-daj a sub-committee was appointed to confer with a sub-committee of the B awera district in ascertaining the amount of damage sustained by the fire. Major Atkinson, Colonel Trimble and Mr Samuel were appointed to apply to Government to supplement subscriptions received by a grant. It is now believed that tbe greater part of the misunderstanding between tbe Hawera and New Plymouth committees occurred owing to a mistake in one of the telegrams sent by the agent of the Pre?B Association here. In the telegram the words " locally subscribed " appeared instead of the words "already subscribed"; that gave a false impression to the colony that what had been raised in Taranaki alone would be sufficient. It is probable that the Hawera and New Plymouth committees will act in unison, Mr Skinner, surveyor, handed iv bis report of the estimated damage at the meeting of the Relief Committee to-day, but tho contents arc not yet made known.
