Invercaegill, August 3.

A meeting of influential citizens was held last night to consider the political situation— Mr J. F. Martin in the chair. It was resolved that those present select a ' candidate to contest the coming election of a member for Invercargill. Messrs M. Macdonald, J. R. Cuthbertson, and J. W. Bain were proposed. The first named, who is most popular here, positively declined to stand. A ballot was then taken between the remaining two, aud Mr Bain selected, the votes being 39 to 27. The meeting then formed itself into an association to watch over the political interest of ! theHbwn, and promote 'constitutional government. All the present members in the House, Dr Hodgkinson, Messrs Joyce, Feldwick, and Shanks, will stand again, and also Hirst for Riverton and Kinross for Invercargill.

A seven-roomed cottage at Gladstone was destroyed by fire earl} tbis morning. The house was owned by Mr Baslin, and it is believed was insured. The furniture was insured in the New Zealand office for £250.
