Greys aboard who would have landed at the same time and completed their journey overland had they foreseen what Was in store for them, but with perfect faith itl their bar— and in their almanac— characteristic of the denizens of that port, they sailed, homeward bound, with a cheery breeze and thoughts upon the home sweet home so near, and yet so far— on the other side of the baf. It was crUel of the elements to cut up rough JHst then, and more cruel still of somebody to swear — and in his presence too — that the body of that almanac editor should try the depth of the bar before the next edition of his valuable compendium, and even more oruel was the withering look of the old lady who 1 looked at tbe bar, and then at her almanac — "14ft indeed." We will draw the veil over the scene that followed, for our readers oan imagine the agony of those Greyites when the anchor chain parted and the steamer steamed away to the Buller for shelter. However, ifc ia an ill wind that blows nobody good. The almanac man of the Grey has become wiser if sadder, aud in his next edition he will put it thusly :—: — " There is not 14ft of water on the Grey bar* nor anything like ifc, but there is a handy place of refuge further nor'ards that can be depended upon when you can't get in the Grey, but don't go there if you can help it, because if you do, you will never come to the Grey any more."

There is a chance, if the present calm weather coutinucs, of the Lizzie Guy being got afloat from the* beach at Westport. She lies on a firm saudy bottom, and there is no lack of appliances at Weatport for moving her on ways ready for launching. The getting her afloat will require the services of a more powerful steam tug than the one little paddle-wheeler at the Buller. Our Westport telegrams state that the vessel is already moved sixty feet seaward. The Greymouth Star haviug disappeared for a short period behind a cloud of financial difficulties, will re-appear ou Mouday evening next, as announced, under a new proprietary. Mr Vorley, an old West Coast photographer, long and favorably known at Charleston, Westport, and Reef ton, the other morning .awoke to find himself famously rich. He received at Westport a direct cablegram from London, apprising him that through the death of a near relative be had succeeded to an extensive property. We congratulate Mr Vorley upon his good fortune, and trust that he will lire long to enjoy it. He proceeds to Europe by the next outward mail steamer. The legacy is worth about £3000 per annum. Amateur efforts to augment Hospital funds, do not appear to be unqualified sue* cesses at Reefton. The Times says the amount realised by the three amateur dramatic performances (Octoroon) recently given in aid of the Hospital was £90, but the expenses were very heavy. The ball given on Boxing night in aid of tbe institution proved a financial failure, an indefatigable member of the Hospital Committee who was superintending the festivities having careened against a table of glassware, capsizing the whole concern, and fracturing just enough glass to swallow up all the profits.

Mr James Payne, Clerk to tbe Grey County Council, has returned from the hot springs in the North Island, much benefitted in health by tbe trip. The Grey County Council meet on Monday evening next. Tbe New Zealander recently received a bill from the telegraph office for over £80, the cost of telegraphing, at quadruple rates, Sir George Grey's speech at the Thames. In addition to the presentation made him a short time since by the President of the Otago Caledoniau Society, his admirers at Tokomairiro, last week gave him a gold stop watch, albert chain, and locket, value nearly £60, as a recognition of his services. Mr Thomas Luther Shepherd having gravitated from politics to Government Life Assurance, and then for some months honored Wellington with his presence as a gentleman, unattached, has been appointed Clerk of tbe Court atNaseby, in Otago. The Nelson Mail, referring to the Baby Show held thero on New Year's Day, says: — It was the means of bringing together in a tent, specially erected for the purpose, between 40 and 50 of the lustiest, chubbiest, brightest-eyed, merriest-looking, anti-immi-gration arguments that were ever collected under one roof, and, strange to say, the judges, Mrs Budge (of Marlbprough) and Dr Williams, were, even after their decision was made known, suffered to leave the ground without losing a hair of their heads, notwithstanding the fact that they had doomed 48 anxious, hopeful mothers to disappointment. The first prize, consisting of a handsome plated tea and coffee service, was carried off in triumph by Mr W. Newport, and the second, a silver butter cooler, and a pair of vases, kindly presented by Mr J. Hounsell, by Mrs Perkins. We understand that Mr Warden Broad, who for some time past has had charge of the Buller and Lyell districts, is shortly to be transferred to Ashburton.
