Wellington, July 4.
The Supreme Court was occupied all day over the case of William O'Connor, indicted on three counts charging him with attempting to administer strychnine to William Light. He was found guilty, and 19 to be sentenced to-morrow morning, Patrick Conroy, for cutting and wounding, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labor.
A telegram from Otaki states that the Hydrabad has been driven further ashore, and is almost dry at low water. There is not more than 10 feet at high water. It is now thought it will be impossible to get her off, and it has been decided to telegraph to the South Australian Government to know whether they will be willing to receive the railway rolling stock, if got out safely, instead of insurance money.
The Cabinet met Mr Burns, Postmaster General, Sydney, to-day, and had a long interview, and considered various proposals respecting postal and telegraph business and finally it was resolved to refer the questions to Mr Burns and Mr Fisher, Postmaster- General of New Zealand, to report when the Cabinets decide.
It is rumored that the Government are inclined to join in the duplication arrangement agreed to at the Melbourne Conference.
