THE NEW GOVERNOR OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA.
Captain Goldsworthy, who recently left Melbourne by the mail to assume the colonial secretaryship of Western Australia, rendered distinguished services during the Indian mutiny, and subsequently in the Asbanteo war. it is recorded in the official publication of the Colonial office that, besides taking part in several engagements, he wa3 assistant field- engineer in the defence of the residency of Lucknow until its final relief, and was twice .specially mentioned in despatches. Captain Goldsworthy was afterwards appointed second in command of Sir John Glover's force on the Volta, in 1873, and was left by Sir John Glover in .command of a lanje native force to finish the war with the Ahoonas, whom he engaged and defeated on three occasions when he received the order of St. Michael and St. Georse.
The Russian Government is raising an enforced subscription f§r the wounded among the employees throughout the empire. This subscription, which consists of the arbitrary subtraction of 1 per cent, from the monthly salaries of the employees, has given rise to a great deal of diseatis faction, doubts bciug generally entertained as to the eventual expenditure of it for the purposes for which it s raised.
