The Rev. Dr. Burns, one of the founders of the Province, died this morning, nged seventy-six.
A midwife named Waterhouse has been arrested on a charge of manslaughter.
CiißiSTCHuncn, Jan. 23. The Canterbury and Otago cricketmatch commenced to-day at noon.
The following was the result of the first innings : — Otago 131 ; Canterbury 181, with four wickets to fall. The match will be resumed tomorrow. Taubanoa, Jan. 23. Everything is quiet. The deputation toKingTokangnmutu has not returned.
The Hon. Mr M'L^an left Maketu on Friday for Opotiki.
Mr Hamlin, R.M., has been successful in quieting the Arawas.
Mr M'Lean is expected to return to-day.
The steamer Samson has beon laid up by order of her Melbourne owners.
Mr M'Lean's interview with the Natives was firm but successful.
