OTAGO.

The Otarjo Daily Times ot the 16th January reports: —

Teas have not been marked by much liveliness, only a few good congous being asked for for town trade, but some considerable ■hipments have been made northwards, and further good orders for the new season's congous are expected. In sugars a better business has been done, one or two parcels of size moving privately, and a satisfactory result attending the auction sale of yesterday of the sugars ex Alsagar, transhipped here per Tararua, respecting which we report fine white crystals as realising £38 15s to £37 7s 6d; good yellow and grey crystals, £36 10s to Jt'34 15s; counters, £35 15 to £36; and browns, £33 12s 6d to £32 10s. At these rates, about 6600 bags were quitted; this, considering the opportunities local buyers have had of late, evidences a fairly maintained state of the market. There has been a little demand for oilmen's stores, and some small sales carried through show last quotations about maintained. The demand for dried fruits has fallen off, and the late brisk trade in these goods cannot be expected to revive at present. There is little to report in building materials, except small sales of galvanised iron of English make. In timber, nothing appears to have been doing from first hands, and dealers complain much of the uuusual dullness of the season. Candles continue quiet, as does kerosene, thought the reduced stocks of the latter article will probably cause it to have some attention directly. Dundee goods continue neglected, though it is likely that Backs will come into notice to some extent directly. The produce market wears a tone of unvarying quiet. Town-made flour U maintained at a quotation of £13, though this rate is only obtainable for smallsized parcels, and outside holders are freely offering at a lower figure. Wheats have been moved, but not very freely, our quotations of 4s 9d to 5s being scarcely obtainable. Oats, steady at 2s 8d to 2s 9d. Barley, almost unsaleable. There is an abundant supply of provisions; both northern and provincial shipments of the former are at present difficult to move. Akaroa cheese, overstocked.
