EIGHT-MILE AND NEW RIVER DISTRICT.
(I'UO.U OUR OWN COltlll SPO3DEKT.) Clifton, December 14. During the last week or two there is an improvement to be noticed here in matters general-}'. The Kight-Mile seems to be again showing signs of life. There is still i a numerous population profitably employed in the workings here, and in the vicinity — some of them doit g very well, by' all accounts. The scarcity of waU-r so much complained of lately by the miners seems to have been relieved, to a certain extent, by the few hhowers of last week. In the township there is no great alteration to he ) se<'n. Business seems to have improved a little within the last two or three days, but wo can nwver expect tunes to be now as they were before the No Name rush, whin we consid <r that a number of people who are now at No Name were engaged in mining operations here before the rush took place. In the upper pirt of the district, where numerous parties of miners are scattered along the small cricks a>ul tributaries of the New River, operations are being vigorously proceeded with, and new ground of a payab c character is taken up by degrees, and brought under cultivation for mining purposes Such new discoveries, however inconsiderable they may nppe.tr, are of some importance, tending as they do to open up the back country, and to push civilization further inland. Another week's rain would do a great deal of good for this place. It has been proved beyond doubt that howe»er pleasant fine weather may seem to people not particularly interested and not personally engaged in miin'n.% the wet weather is looked upon by the digger as the mo.st suitable for this pi ice, as it is in f;ic by all digging communities on the Wist Coast ; and the diggers will not complain about a wet jacket as long as they have plenty of water to wash up their stuff; and a show of making fair wages out ot their claims.
