PORT OF HOKITIKA.

ports were the Tararua and the Gothenburg, i both of which sailed from Melbourne ; and ' the sailing vessels were the schooner Excel- ! sior, from Dunedin ; and the Challenge.from Lyttelton ; both vessels returned to the ports from Avhich they- came. One vessel sailed for Melbourne during the month, the Storm Bird, which had arrived in the previous month. The coasting trade, as we before stated, has beeu steady and remarkably well served. Amongthe bonts that have visited the port are thcNcUon steamers Charles Edward, Kennedy, John Perm, and Murray. These have kept us in steady communication the coast ports, j Nelson, and the Manukau harbor, to which j latter there has been a steady trade. To the southern ports and those in our immediate vicinity northwards, tho steamer Waipnra has done us ample service.

During the month, with the exception of one or two breaks, the weather has boon splendid, and judging from the report of ships from Melbourne, favorable weather has been met with between the two coasts. Some of the craft from the East Coast report indifferent weather in the jhannel, which delayed their passages.

The bar during the month, as far as carrying water if concerned, has been everything that could be desired, but unfortunately il has been rather difficult to navigate, owiug to

the north and south spits overlapping each other. This, however, the first heavy fresh will remove, and tliou our bar will challenge comparison with any on the Coast.

The shipping during the month has been quite equal to the preceling month, in fact it may be said to have scarcely varied in the number of vessels and tonnage. We have had the usual number of Melbourne steamers, which have arrived and departed with .the utmost regularity. The sailing vessels from Melbourne have also been in about the usual ratio. We have had, this month, no sailing vessel from any other port but Melbourne. From interprovincial ports, the trade has not been so good as in the previous month ; bur. the trade coastwise has been steady as usual. The arrivals from Melbourne were the steamships Rangitoto and Claud Hamilton, both of which hiir] quick despatch for Northern ports.
