Ropata and Ihika Wanga are here, and are desirous to proceed to Wellington to consult the Government as to the future war proceedings. The Sturt towed the Mnrewai (schooner) here from Wairoa. A dinner was given by civilians to the men of the 18th on Saturday, and there will be one to the officers this
eveuing. Captain Khodes, the Deputy-Super-intendent, takes the chair. Wellington, 7.45 a.m. Mr Gray's Self-reliance resolutions were brought before the Legislative Council, and were negatived by 21 to 7. Wardens, Keddell, and Broad, of the Thames Goldfields, have resigned their situations on account of urgent private affairs. It is understood they are going into business together on the field. Their successors are not yet appointed. The New Zealand Steam Navigation Company, held a meeting 1 , and a resolution in favor of the sale to the Circular Saw Co. was carried by 16 to 17. Three-fourths of those present are required to assent, and the majority is not sufficient to confirm the resolution. A poll is being taken to-night. On the report to the House of Mr Fox's resolution, Mr Stevens asked the Government to postpone their [consideration until after the financial statement had been made. Mr Fox refused to postpone both resolutions, but continued to do so with the second as to specific amount. He pressed for a decision on the first resolution. Mr Stafford moved an amendment, affirming' the necessity for a general reduction of the Colonial expenditure generally, but expressing inability to say what until possessed of fuller finance information. The debate is still going on, Mr Hall speaking.
