Gentlemen, — I have much pleasure in acceding to your request that I should offer myself as a candidate for the Borough of Hokitika at the forthcoming Election of Members for the County Council. As it would be impossible for me in the limit of a reply to your requisition to enter into a full explanation of many matters on which information may be desired, I propose at an early date to meet the public, in order that I may offer any explanations on such matters, and to afford the fullest opportunity for their learning my opinion on many important questions affecting the well-being of the district. My intimate connection with public matters since the earliest clays of Westland, and the repeated occasions on which I have had the pleasure of stating my views to the electors, must however have enabled my ideas on most matters of interest to be generally known, and the generous support which has been hitherto accorded me whenever I was a candidate for your suffrages, has made me feel that these opinions were such as met with approval and regard. I thank you sincerely for the confidence you have been pleased to express in my past political career, as more especially sitice I have acted as the representative head of the Government I have been at times placed in positions of peculiar difficulty ; but I can confidently assert that in all my actions I have been actuated solely by a desire to do what was most for the permanent interests and future prosperity of the County. Now that Westland has been entrusted with large powers of local self-government, and has attained the right of expending her own revenue, an opportunity will be afforded which has never before existed, of developing her resources, and if returned I will use my utmost endeavors to accomplish this end. Thanking you for the honor you have done me. I remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, 4007 JAS. A. BONAR,
