To Messrs Alexander Mcc, J. Cosgrave, W. Evans, J. P. Klein, and the other gentlemen signing the requisition. '• Gentlemen, — It is with much diffidence and some reluctance I have allowed myself to comply with your wishes to stand, as a candidate for the ensuing elections, in the County Council. That I feel the compliment you have paid me I will not be so disingenious as to deny ; but at the same time I cannot but be sensible of the very grave responsibility ■which will devolve upon me should I find myself, on the declaration of the poll, returned as your representative. I am ready to submit my conduct to you as your Munisipal representative, which I sincerely hope has met with your fullest approval. I went into the Town Council with but one object, and that was faithfully to serve your interests. I devoted myself to a strict retrenchment in the working machinery of the Corporation ; and in the face of a strong, and I may say, a factious opposition. I have been successful, although certainly not to the full extent of my wishes. Nevertheless, I have gained a step in the right direction ; and as I intend to continue in the same course, I have little doubt of a complete ultimate success. Wnat my efforts have been in the Corporation I promise you shall be applied in a more determinate form in the County Council should you honour me with your suffrage . I believe that in order to secure the permanent prosperity of the West Coast, the utmost economy must be exercised in all of the working departments. I am of opinion that we have been badly governed, inasmuch that no bold attempt has been made to opeti up the auriferous districts. As lam convinced that at present,- and- for a .long t'me to come, our main source of wealth will depend altogether upon the successful working of our goldfields, my whole energies shall be directed to the accomplishment of so desirable an object. : We tracks cut through all the districts known to be auriferous. We must have bridges and roads made, both of a cheap. alth6 ! u" h at first," perhaps, of a rou^Md; unfinished description, to enable
